EVENT OVERVIEW

Energy Projects Dealroom

As the global community intensifies efforts to combat climate change and transition towards sustainable energy sources, Africa stands at a pivotal crossroads in unlocking its hydro energy potential. With abundant water bodies and other natural resources and growing energy demand, the continent presents a unique opportunity for energy investments in the hydro sector that can drive economic growth, enhance energy security, uphold industrial development and mitigate environmental impacts.

In recognition of this opportunity, the 6/25 Africa Energy Indaba is proud to present its commitment to unlocking hydro energy investments in Africa through an Energy Projects Dealroom Side Event. This initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of hydro energy projects across the continent by addressing key barriers and catalysing private sector participation.

THE ENERGY PROJECTS DEALROOM WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIC AREAS:

Energy Project Pitch Presentations:

Presenting energy projects from across Africa and inviting interested developers, financiers, EPC contractors, etc. to participate and access the business opportunity linked to the project.

Policy and Regulatory Support:

Working closely with governments and regulatory authorities to create an enabling policy environment that incentivizes hydro energy investments, streamlines permitting processes, and ensures fair market access for hydro energy developers.

Project Development and Financing:

Providing technical assistance and financial support to hydro energy projects at various stages of development, from feasibility studies and project design to financing and implementation, to attract investment and de-risk projects for investors.

Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing:

Building local capacity and expertise in hydro energy project development, financing, and management through training programmes, knowledge sharing platforms, and partnerships with educational institutions and industry associations.

Market Development and Stakeholder Engagement:

Facilitating market development by fostering collaboration among stakeholders, promoting hydro energy technologies and solutions, and raising awareness about the economic, social, and environmental benefits of hydro energy.

Hyddro energy holds the key to unlocking Africa’s energy potential and driving sustainable development across the continent. Through the Energy Projects Dealroom the Africa Energy Indaba, 25 is committed to mobilising resources, forging partnerships, developing the business opportunity and catalysing action to accelerate the transition to clean, affordable, and reliable energy in Africa.

STRATEGIC HYDRO DAMS AND POTENTIAL RIVERS:

Inga currently production 1,775mw (potential - 100,000mw +):

The Inga site is globally unique due to the immense scale of its hydropower potential (around 42,000 MW) and the diverse opportunities for its development. Effectively harnessing this potential could be transformative for the DRC and provide significant benefits to Sub-Saharan Africa and the world more broadly. Once the enormous Inga 3 is developed to the full, it has the ability to produce more 100,000 MW together with Inga 1 and 2 combined as Grand Inga.

Cahora basa 2,075mw:

The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Complex has been in operation since 1975, using water from the Zambezi River. It is the largest hydroelectric plant in southern Africa, with an installed capacity of 2,075 MW from five 415 MW Francis-type turbines. The project can generate up to 18,000 GWh of electricity per year

Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (6,000mw):

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is expected to produce over 15,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually:

  • Capacity: The GERD's capacity has changed over time:

    • 2011: The original plan was for 15 generating units with a total capacity of 5,250 MW.

    • 2017: The design was changed to add another 450 MW, bringing the total capacity to 6,450 MW.

    • 2019: The power generation capacity was 5,150 MW.

    • Production: The GERD's peak production is expected to occur in September.

    • Water source: The GERD will source water from the Blue Nile, Africa's longest river.

The GERD is Africa's largest hydroelectric power dam. It's over a mile long and 145 meters high.

The GERD is expected to have a significant impact on the Nile flow, both inter- and intra-annually. There are ongoing negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt on how to manage the dam.

    • With a planned installed capacity of 5.15 gigawatts when completed, the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa and among the 20 largest in the world.

Giggle Gibe 3 Dam. 1,870mw:

Once fully commissioned, it will be the third largest hydroelectric plant in Africa with a power output of about 1,870 Megawatt (MW), thus more than doubling its capacity

Market Development and Stakeholder Engagement:

Facilitating market development by fostering collaboration among stakeholders, promoting hydro energy technologies and solutions, and raising awareness about the economic, social, and environmental benefits of hydro energy.
